Siggraph Post

*\\BIG SIGGRAPH POST COPY PASTE FROM AP//*

-Sunday
Flew into Seattle around 3ish. Spent a few hours exploring the Fresh Food Market which was really cool. Got the rental car and drove into Vancouver, to our really .. um interesting hotel.

welcome to canada... um what the hell is that??

-Monday
First day of Siggraph! Got the basic 1day pass which let me into the studio hall, where there were a bunch of weird and artsy tech on display. Got my head scanned into an .obj by a lazer! There was a lot of really cool foreign people here with fantastic accents presenting their stuff.

the guy in the hat is Mike, my animation prof. This marks the 3rd trip I've taken with him I guess??

some of the 3d printers

^can't tell from the pic, but the chair simulates the feel of driving the car on screen

some vids of all the really cool stuff

-Tuesday
Animation Fest 1day pass today. The job fair and exhibition hall opened today, which me and my friend sort of went through before the Pixar La Luna Talk. Got a portfolio review from a guy from Microsoft, and talked to some of the colleges there that I was interested in. SCAD totally waved my graduate application fee and Sheridan seemed really nice. The day ended with the Animation Festival Showcase, which had a lot of animated shorts, some breakdowns from present studios on how they did CG in movies like Thor and Harry Potter, and some technical stuff.

^a real time art contest was held all day. Unfortunately I didn't participate!

^proof that my assessment that Canada=candyland is accurate

^These guys would take off and land on the water right behind the convention center!

^guy from Think Tank

^Ringling (Defective Detective, as well as this year's other shorts were playing on screen)

vids: trailers for my two favorite shorts (The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore is available on itunes and is totally worth it) and the technical papers clip

-Wednesday
This was another Basic 1day pass, but most of my time was spent on the 3rd floor in a medium sized room listening to Disney Presentations and waiting to have my reel reviewed. This wasn't advertised in the schedule, and the only people who knew about it were those who dropped by the disney booth in the job fair and took a flyer, so it was refreshingly not packed. This day ended up being the best of lot, even if the Disney animator who viewed my reel totally destroyed it (lol). Disney presentations included Creating Appealing Characters, Creating Believable Worlds, (both heavily about Tangled) and a presentation of the Disney Intern/Training Programs, which included some work from the current interns who are all totally out of my league. 8I Met Bruce Smith who was incredibly nice. Afterwards, I popped in the Exibit hall once again and listened to a presentation on Pixar's Renderman software (the longest frame in TS3 took 45 hours to render!!) and chatted with animation mentor people (got invited to the AM after party but ended up not going :( sad ), as well as Digital Domain peeps. Everyone was so surprisingly frendly. Sat through the Owls of Gahoole talk, which was interesting because Animal Logic is totally off the chain, even if their movies are kind of meh story wise. We didn't feel like sitting through the Dailies, so we went to a really fantastic and inexpensive pizza place called Papa's Gormet Pizza and I am totally going back if I'm ever in Vancouver again. Then everyone wanted to go to the beach so we went to the first beach we could find which ended up being a clothes optional beach and watched the Sun set over the Salish Sea. Most people had clothes on (lol) and the water was really chilly.

^The Black dude is Bruce Smith, the lead animator on Dr. Facilier on Princess and the Frog. Didn't get a lot of pix because Disney is like that. Did get some free food and coffee though

^Brave Trailer :3

^Elephant tree??

^that water is fucking cold

Thursday
Not much happened today. Drove back to Seattle and then flew out over Mt Ranier. It was a full flight and probably the most unpleasant I've ever been on, but it was cool to fly over the large cities at night (even a lightning storm). It's good to be home.

^our beautiful hotel room

^good bye freaky ass thing. till we meet again.
